Rock-paper-scissors is one of the most popular hand games in the world. It is a game of randomness: at each turn, the probabilities of winning against your adversary reset. A game of randomness played by one or more artificial intelligence machines is boring. A game of randomness played by two human beings can be fun, competitive, violent, and can establish feelings of rivalry through strategies based on the psychological analysis of the competitors. This is the nature of the game; to interpret the competitor’s game.
Urge oggi is a reflection on the relationship between art and games, art and technology, AI and games. Can a machine play? What about human beings?
Does an AI machine have fun? Can it interpret? In a game of randomness, the perception of winning (i.e. one of the competitors wins three consecutive rounds) is still real, so the player shouldn’t have any expectations. This doesn’t happen between two human beings and that’s how strategies are established.
This is what generates the dynamics of the game. An AI machine merely generates random possibilities, eliminating the idea of a game. Is that what is urgently needed today?
